Working during the Super Bowl sucks. I was surrounded by TVs, yet I missed all the good plays & commercials.

Dreams

I dreamt that I was in school, and a few Knicks players stopped by.  It was cool seeing them, and I was thinking about how crazy it is that we have some NBA players from Mohawk.  I started thinking that it’s actually probably not that uncommon for famous players to come from little towns like ours.  But in reality it is very uncommon, and we’ve never had an NBA player from this area as far as I know.

Then I had a dream that I started a new office job, which I assume was some kind of telemarketing thing because we all just say “I need to make some calls.”  We all had some packets that we’d get each day, and I assume they tell us who to call and whatnot.  But in this dream I was working next to this really attractive woman, and we were going to go out.  I was telling a friend about it at work, and I found something that told me she was 24 which made me relieved because I wasn’t sure if she was much older than me (not by looks, but just afraid).  Then the boss came over, and I said that it’s time I make some calls.  I hoped he wouldn’t yell at me for talking and not working, so that sounded like a good thing to say.

One Year Ago Today

I used to describe the endings of all the close NBA games each night, and that’s exhausting to read.  I can’t believe I took the trouble to write it all down before.  At this point I wasn’t able to watch the ends of all the games because the site I watched them on was seized, which makes me happy now because my commentary should be shortened.

Thoughts

I’ve been putting off talking about Malcolm in the Middle so I could formulate everything I wanted to say about it without leaving anything out, but of course I did forget some things.  It’s called Malcolm in the Middle because he’s the main character, so he narrates throughout.  But it’s not a recollection or anything, but he addresses the camera to explain his thoughts or what’s going on and the rest of the characters don’t see it.  One time he said something to another character, and then he addressed the camera to say that that’s what he should have said, and then he walked back in place and repeated the scene but with the truth.  I like when characters narrate, address the audience, or break the fourth wall.  And I mentioned that the youngest son—Dewey—is a really cute kid.  They do a funny thing with him, which is showing his perspective on things.  Like when his mom says he can’t have a toy and to stop asking, we see that he hears “Ask me again in 5 seconds”.  Lots of little jokes like that, which keeps me interested.

I’ll mention a few side things that come to mind.  Almost every show starts with a cold opening that’s just an unrelated joke, and most of them are really funny.  The intro song started off kind of cool, but it quickly got pretty annoying.  I don’t remember who does the song, but we hear the words, “Yes, no, maybe, I don’t know.  Can you repeat the question?  You’re not the boss of me now, [repeat two more times], and you’re not so big.  Life is unfair.”  The annoying part is how they say “Can you repeat the question” because it sounds really whiny.  During the intro they show clips of the boys making trouble which is kind of cool.  And Malcolm has a black friend who is in a wheel chair, and he has some kind of asthma that makes him speak one or two words at a time and nothing more.  It makes for some good jokes.

My Day

I woke up tired early in the morning, and I first thought that I would still have a few hours to sleep since I would any other day.  But it was just a few minutes before I had to get up for church so I had to get up.  The service was pretty good, and I really should try to go more.  The sermon was about Jesus and how He was always looking to preach to people just beyond the borders in order to touch more people.  It was good to go again finally.  Then I hung out and finished Season 4 of Malcolm before work.

This was my only day of work this week, and it was much busier than I expected.  I started at a cash game and then had a tournament down, and the tournament only had three tables so it was very small.  It was hard to deal because everyone was paying more attention to the Super Bowl, but I wanted to watch it too.  Unfortunately I missed basically everything because I couldn’t watch for more than a few seconds at a time.  I had my first break during halftime which was useless, and then the game was over by my next one.  I taped it all so I’ll watch the highlights tomorrow as well as all of the commercials.

The room completely collapsed the minute the game was over, which I didn’t really mind.  By 11pm the board had just six tables all with table-break, so I was cut at the four-hour minimum.  I somehow made $89 which seems pretty good for four hours and slightly above average for five downs.  I got only one stiff and just one $2 tip, although that was more like two $1 tips for the same hand.  The rest were all $1 but it was steady.

After work Brian and I hit up Taco Bell in Utica, and it was one of the best Taco Bell trips I’ve ever had.  One time the food was pretty burnt which wasn’t that good, but this time it was all fresh and tasted delicious.  Since there was a McDonald’s right across the street we got Shamrock Shakes afterward, which I’m sure marks the first multiple drive-thru experience I’ve had in one day.  Then I went home and finished Season 3 of Seinfeld, so I’m trying to catch up to Malcolm.  Now I’m going to bed, and hopefully tomorrow I’ll get my watch and get it fitted and I’ll be all back.  Thanks for reading, and “If you identified with the kids from The Breakfast Club when it came out, you’re now much closer to the age of Principal Vernon.”
